CCN Holds Successful Annual Conference in Durham
The new unitary Durham County Council was the host for the CCN's successful Annual Conference on 16 and 17 November. We welcomed a wide range of speakers, including Roy Clare, Chief Executive of the Museums, Libraries and Archives Council, Ben Page of Ipsos MORI, Debbie Scott of employment charity Tomorrow’s People, Stuart Etherington of the National Council of Voluntary Organisations, and David Frost, Chief Executive of the British Chambers of Commerce. Delegates also heard from Ian Thompson of Durham County Council about the council's work to boost cultural opportunties in the county.
We were pleased to welcome national representatives from all three major political parties. Helen Goodman MP, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, spoke about the Government’s work to tackle child poverty, while Caroline Spelman MP, Shadow Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, and Julia Goldsworthy MP, Liberal Democrat Local Government Spokesman. Professor Tony Travers of the London School of Economics also joined us by live video link-up to talk about the future of local government and politics.
Delegates had a number of opportunities to share learning and ideas, both formally in a series of workshops, and informally through a number of networking opportunities. The event co-incided with the Lumiere light festival taking place across Durham City; delegates were treated to an after-dinner speech by Nicky Webb of Artichoke, the company behind it, and many took the chance to see the show in person.
Presentations from the day will be available on our website soon.
