Today the family of former Local Government Secretary James Brokenshire have announced that he has passed away at the age of 53.

Mr Brokenshire served as Secretary of State for Housing, Communities, and Local Government from 2018 to 2019 – working closely with the County Councils Network.

Cllr Tim Oliver, Chairman of the County Councils Network, said:

We are all deeply saddened and shocked by the news of the passing of the Rt.Hon. James Brokenshire MP at such a young age.

“As Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government, James was a strong supporter of the vital role that councils and their communities play.

“He was kind, thoughtful, and engaging: working closely with the sector to represent our interests within government. On behalf of the County Councils Network’s member councils across the country I would like to pass on my sincere condolences to his family.”
