The County Councils Network is deeply saddened to hear that Cllr Ian Stewart passed away at the weekend.

Cllr Stewart, first elected to Cumbria County Council in 2001, has played a prominent part in the network’s successes over the last few years. He was CCN’s spokesman for communities and wellbeing. In recent months, he was involved in national advocacy over public health funding for county authorities.

Below, CCN’s director Simon Edwards pays tribute to Cllr Stewart:

“We are all deeply saddened by the death of Cllr Ian Stewart. As well as playing a leading role on Cumbria County Council, we were privileged to work with him in his capacity as the County Councils Network (CCN) spokesman for communities and wellbeing.

“Ian was a dedicated public servant and has played a hugely prominent role in CCN’s successes over the last couple of years. He carried out his duties at CCN not only with dedication, but with good humour and a sensitivity to both officers and members across the political divide. He will be missed by all across the network.

“Our thoughts are with his family during this time.”
