Today it has been announced that Joanna Killian is to become the new chief executive of the Local Government Association.

Joanna is currently chief executive of Surrey County Council and will join the LGA in March. She also currently chairs the Association of County Chief Executives and was formerly chief executive of Essex County Council.

Below, the County Councils Network responds.

Simon Edwards, Chief Executive of the County Councils Network, said:

“On behalf of the County Councils Network, I would like to congratulate Joanna Killian on becoming the new chief executive of the Local Government Association (LGA). She will bring a wealth of experience, passion and drive to this essential role in representing councils on the national stage at one of the most challenging times for the sector and as we head into what is likely to be a general election year.

“Having worked very closely with Joanna as a county chief executive for Essex County Council and then Surrey County Council, as well as her more recent role as chair of the Association of County Chief Executives, I know she has a deep understanding of the opportunities and challenges facing our member councils and the wider sector. I look forward to continuing, and strengthening, our close collaboration with the LGA to further the interests of our member councils and all parts of the local government family.”
